The Optical Society Selects DCL for Major Publishing Project
Fresh Meadows, NY: The Optical Society (OSA) has selected Data Conversion Laboratory, Inc. (DCL) to convert its back-file, and the setup phase is now underway. A key project objective is to standardize the disparate file formats—including multiple legacy versions of SGML and XML–to a single, industry standard format that uses the NLM 3.0 XML model.
OSA serves the information needs of optics and photonics scientists, engineers, and educators from over 100 countries. OSA publishes and co-publishes 15 scientific journals, and houses the largest single collection of peer-reviewed optics and photonics research in its Optics InfoBase platform.
Speaking on behalf of OSA, Scott Dineen, Deputy Senior Director of Publishing, said: "It is difficult to find a conversion partner who can handle the level of complexity associated with content like ours [tables and inline math notations are common in physics communications] and who can produce it with a high degree of accuracy. The fact that DCL has a proven track record with us, and that they have so much experience with the document model used by the National Library of Medicine made them the best choice for us for this initiative."
Mark Gross, DCL President and CEO, added: "We have been handling LaTeX manuscripts for OSA as a step in their publication of current titles. We are pleased to extend that relationship to this back-file work. All our customers receive a high level of service, but the more complicated the project, the more we shine. After 30 years of business, DCL has learned what it takes to be the vendor of choice."
