PRESS RELEASE
DCL and SAE Reveal Results of Re-Engineering the Publishing Production Process
“Our production volume has gone up, while the time and resources needed to make it happen have gone down.” – Becky Fadik, Business Unit Leader, SAE International

Fresh Meadows, NY, October 20, 2014Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL), an industry leader in organizing and converting content into digital formats, announced today the results of its latest project with SAE International, a global association committed to being the ultimate knowledge source for the engineering profession. In four months, DCL has succeeded in meeting SAE International’s aggressive goal of improving the production, efficiency and quality of the nearly 2,000 SAE International technical papers and journal articles produced annually. Through automation combining XML and Adobe InDesign developed by DCL for SAE International, SAE saw an immediate six percent cost reduction in its Content Management Business Unit budget; this first use alone of the DCL-developed content conversion tool more than paid for itself, and will continue to yield benefits in the future as SAE develops new products.

“DCL is ahead of the curve with its work for SAE International,” said Becky Fadik, Business Unit Leader, SAE International. “We knew we needed specialized knowledge to make this project work, the kind of in-depth background that we only found with DCL. They brought so much insight to the project that in the end we had a much stronger tool than we had ever envisioned. Our production volume has gone up, while the time and resources needed to make it happen have gone down.”

SAE International publishes complex technical papers and journal articles submitted by experts throughout the mobility industry. It distributes approximately three thousand of these articles per year to information consumers in industry, academia and government. Accuracy, speed to publication and cost-efficiency across its publishing business is key to enhancing the credibility and success of an organization that has been a trusted resource for mobility industry stakeholders since 1905.

“We’re very gratified to have been able to help SAE International to improve their publishing process. We’ve worked with SAE in the past with large scale content conversion. Our work here has gone well beyond that,” said Mark Gross, President, DCL. “Involving consulting, process improvement, editorial and production re-engineering, the project spanned many areas and we’re proud of the results we achieved for SAE.”

“The DCL team helped us to anticipate future issues and opened the opportunity for us to think differently about how we publish as a whole,” concluded Ms. Fadik. “For example, we’re now looking at conversion of our compendium of over 8,300 ground vehicle, aerospace and aerospace material specifications, which serve as current industry standards. We’re now looking at the success of the tool developed by DCL, and how it could help us take this and other product lines in a new direction, including expanded audiences, potential new revenue streams and even better service for our customers.”
