Happy Birthday ChatGPT! I Can't Even Imagine the Surly Teenage Years

Today, November 30th 2023, ChatGPT turns 1 year old. Having lived through the early days of the World Wide Web, Netscape Navigator, SGML, Napster, and other technologies I can accurately say I've never seen a technology emerge with such force to transform the work environment so quickly. I absolutely recognize that the hype is strong with this tech and I don't need or want all my tools (especially my MarCom tools) to be "powered by AI." Yet here we are.

As a pragmatic optimist, I continue to explore use cases with LLMs that improve my work life. I'm heartened to report I really embrace generative images from text and generative fill. I'm not sold on generative text for marketing copy or blog writing but I recognized that I might feel differently in another year (or maybe a couple months because time is an odd construct where AI is concerned).

Every week I hear stories from industry colleagues who harness generative AI in a meaningful way. I'd love to hear your experiments with tools that bring success to you personally or your organization. Leave a note in the comments about tools you use and would recommend.

In the meantime, I'll share today's conversation I had with ChatGPT:

MC: happy birthday

ChatGPT: Thank you! It's been a year filled with conversations, questions, and learning. How can I assist you today?

MC: You are 1 year old today. Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

ChatGPT: As a machine learning model created by OpenAI, I don't have personal experiences, goals, or a sense of self. My future development is determined by the decisions and advancements made by the researchers and engineers at OpenAI. The trajectory of AI development depends on a variety of factors, including technological breakthroughs, ethical considerations, and societal decisions.

Predicting the specific capabilities or role I might have in 15 years is challenging due to the rapidly evolving nature of artificial intelligence. OpenAI and other organizations are likely to continue refining and improving AI systems, incorporating feedback and addressing ethical concerns.

It's important to note that any future developments will be subject to careful consideration of ethical guidelines, privacy concerns, and the potential impact on society. As of now, I don't have personal aspirations or a vision for the future, but my purpose is to assist and provide information to the best of my abilities based on the input I receive.
